WW I

World War I (WWI), also known as the First World War, or the Great War, was a global war originating in Europe that lasted from July 28,1914 to November 11, 1918.

More than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilized in one of the largest wars in history. Over nine million combatants and seven million civilians died as a result of the war (including the victims of a number of genocides). The casualty rate was exacerbated by the combatants' technological and industrials sophistication, and the tactical stale mate cause by the grueling trench warfare.

By August 1918, it is estimated that approximately 1,200 residents of Polk County were enlisted in the service--about 625 whites and 575 Blacks. Black soldiers from Lakeland who served in World War I are:
