Serving our country

Since the inception of the United States, Blacks like Crispus Attucks have played a significant role in the defense of the liberties prescribed in the American Constitution.   Black Lakelanders have served in each branch of the military including the Air Force, Army and Navy.

In this section, Veterans in the Community, members of Lakeland's Black community who served during the city's first 100 years are recognized.   Many served during peaceful times.  However, several protected the United States during times of war.

It is worth noting that during the Spanish-American War, Black soldiers from the 10th Calvary Regiment of the United States Army, also known as the Buffalo Soldiers, were stationed in Lakeland.  Like the Buffalo Soldiers, Black Lakelanders were monumental in protecting America's freedom.

The information displayed in this section is a small portion of information about the veterans from Lakeland's Black community during the first 100 years.   We know there is more.  Contact Us if you have information like pictures you don't mind sharing.
