New Bethel AME developed from a need for Blacks living in the area known as Teaspoon Hill to have local neighborhood church. Up until that point, the Blacks in Teaspoon Hill walked to Mt. Pleasant AME in Moorehead.
Services for the new church were originally held in the home of Dan Tillis Threets because the followers didn't have an official building.
