Lakeland High

Black students began attending Lakeland High as early as 1964, when two students enrolled in the high school.  Following that year, the numbers steadily increased particularly after Polk County School Board closed the all Black Rochelle High, in 1970.

During the 1970, the Black student population remained relatively level until 1980, when the school board opened Lake Gibson High.  As a result of redistricting, Lakeland High experienced a dramatic drop in Black student enrollment.

Lakeland High began to excel athletically as it had done academically after integration.  Several of it Black athletes went on to be successful in college and professionally.  Many of its Black students have also gone on to be successful in business, entertainment, government and politics.
