Lake Gibson High

Lake Gibson High School opened the 1979-1980 academic year.  It was third high school built in Lakeland, and the first built since integration in the early seventies.

The Black student population was a result of redistricting of the Black community.  Some students were from neighborhoods that previously fed Kathleen and Lakeland High schools.  Also, there was an increasing number of Black students in neighborhoods that were developing in the far North part of Lakeland known as Gibsonia.

The majority of the Black faculty and staff were reassigned from Kathleen and Lakeland High schools.
