Kathleen High

Black students began attending Kathleen High in the 1969 - 1970 academic school year.  The Black students were a large portion of the students who would have attended the all Black Rochelle High School, which the Polk County School Board closed at the end of the 1968 - 1969 academic year.

During the 1970s, the Black student population remained relatively level at Kathleen High. Each year, a little over one hundred Black students graduated from the high school.  This trend continued until 1980, when the school board opened Lake Gibson High.  As a result of redistricting, Kathleen High experienced a dramatic drop in Black student enrollment.

Kathleen High began to excel athletically after integration.  Several of it Black athletes went on to be successful in college and professionally.  Many of its Black students have also gone on to be successful in business, entertainment, government and politics.
