The Sixth Street Church of Christ beginnings go back to February 11, 1929.  At that time, the Lake Wire Church of Christ conducted a gospel meeting among about 40 Blacks who were baptized and began the congregation.

In the 1930s, the congregation met in a small meeting house at 1214 N Virginia Avenue.   In the 1960s, an addition was made to the meeting house and congregation officially adopted it's current name.

During the 1980s, the congregation continued to grow and prosper.  In turn, they made another addition to the church including adding a fellowship hall, a kitchen and more classroom facilities.  In the early 1990s, the congregation enlarged the auditorium and foyer and added more office spaces.
