Businesses in Lakeland's Black community were a natural premonition of the community's growing social needs for the first 100 years.

 

In this section, Professionals in the Community:  Business, we identify many of the Black business developed in the community.  Some of the businesses had storefronts.  However many were men and women who were known to have a skill, like handyman or laundry cleaner, that others in the community needed and were willing to pay for.

 

In many cases, the Black businesses emulated the businesses and the supply chains as the majority society.   Some differences are that whites who provided materials to Black businesses commonly charged Blacks more for the same items, sold Blacks inferior material, or refused to sell Blacks supplies.

 

Despite the many challenges Black businesses worked diligently to provide their customers, sometimes including the whites, the best service possible.  When dealing with whites this was extra important because if accused otherwise, the repercussions could be nonpayment, destruction of their business location, beating  or death.
